Revealing the Shocking Dangers of Synthetic Hair

Posted on March 30, 2025March 30, 2025 By goddesshomemaking

Hidden Ick

Synthetic wigs and extensions may be a go-to choice for versatility and affordability. But have you wondered what’s intertwined in those beautiful fibers? From toxic chemicals to fire hazards. Synthetic hair can pose some serious risks to not only your health but also the environment. Let’s go ahead and talk about it.

Synthetic hair is made up of plastic-derived fibers like acrylic, nylon and polyester. All of which can contain harmful chemicals. Listed below are some of the toxins that can be found in this type of hair. I have to tell you some of them are a mouthful. I’m gonna go ahead and breakdown some of the exact risks that could be associated with each chemical.

VOCs

These chemicals are ones that evaporate into the air and can cause headaches and dizziness. Inhaling these types of chemicals can also cause respiratory issues.

Formaldehyde

This is a known carcinogen and that’s an obvious no bueno.

Flame Retardants

Flame retardants can disrupt hormones and interfere with brain function.

Phthalates

This is also a hormone disruptor and can cause reproductive issues.

Lead and Heavy Metals

Hair dyes in synthetic hair can contain lead and other toxic metals that can be absorbed through the scalp. I personally know someone who was rushed to the hospital from having a terrible reaction to hair dyes. Let me tell you, it was not pretty!

These can cause neurological damage and organ toxicity.

Styrene and Acrylonitrile

These chemicals are used to create plastic fibers like acrylic. Styrene is a carcinogen while acrylonitrile can cause headaches, nausea and respiratory issues.

More on Why This Matters

When synthetic hair is heated by way of styling tools, sunlight or even a steamy shower (and I love a long hot steamy shower), the chemicals release toxic fumes that you may inhale. Continual exposure overtime can lead to some serious health risks. Therefore, it is essential to choose safer alternatives to take proper precautions.

If you’re concerned about the potential health risks of synthetic hair, the good news is that there may be safer options out there. When searching for safer alternatives, look for 100% human hair. These don’t contain plastic-based fibers. Heat-resistant fiber wigs or non-toxic synthetic fibers as well as biodegradable fiber hair can also be options.

How to Minimize Exposure to Toxins in Synthetic Hair

If you find yourself having a difficult time finding the right alternatives and still need to use synthetic hair, here are some steps you can take to minimize your exposure.

  • Avoid heat styling because high temps can release toxic fumes. If you must use heat, do so in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wash the hair before wearing it. You can soak synthetic hair in apple cider vinegar and water before using it to remove some of the chemicals. Rinse it thoroughly with water and mild shampoo before installing it.
  • Limit your wear time and avoid wearing them for an extended period of time. Especially refrain from them in hot weather to limit exposure to off-gassing chemicals.
  • Choose well- ventilated wigs with breathable caps to reduce scalp irritation and excessive sweating which can also increase chemical absorption.
  • Check for safety certifications because some conscious wig brands have their products tested for harmful chemicals. You can keep your eyes open for safety labels like OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which ensures the product is free from hazardous substances.

By making informed choices, you can still enjoy those cute styles while protecting your health as well as the environment.
